When I first heard about Windows XP, I was a bit skeptical.
Here was another one of Microsoft's attempts
to make a stable OS. They failed us with Windows ME. Will they fail us
with XP?
As more and more news and info came out about Windows XP, I thought it would be the end of us all. First was the crazy authorization stuff. Then there was the infamous Remote Assistance. I figured that was Microsoft's attempt to get into your computer and see what you were up to. It was around that time when I saw Antitrust. (Pretty good movie. Makes you even more suspicious of Microsoft than you already were.) Then come the news of how they abolished DOS. And instead it will just be emulated. We never wanted to let go of our precious DOS. It has been our friend for so long. But now, its time has passed. Then come rumors of how stable it is. How it never crashes. How you never see the Blue Screen of Death. Uh huh... that's what they said about WinME. A few months had passed after it was released. So far, I had heard nightmares about it, and dreams come true. Most of what people thought of it was good. After they had released a service pack, I decided to give it a try. I was sick of Windows 98 SE anyway. Installation was pretty simple. Not very pretty, but simple. The thing I didn't like, was they didn't really explain much about NTFS or FAT32. I chose NTFS cause some people swear by it. I can't really tell any difference. When you first start it up, the desktop is very empty, except for a nice Telly-tubby land background and the Recycle bin. What's nice is I didn't have to install any drivers for my video card or my network card, but I did have to install the drivers for my SoundBlaster Audigy, since its all fancy and new. He he he. Since they have changed it so much from 98 and ME, it takes a while to get it just the way you like it. I don't see why they had to change the start menu up so much. I mean, it was perfectly fine. They could have just left it the same. But no! They have to "innovate!" Out of all of the features they added in Windows XP, one of my favorites is themes. With themes, you can forget you have a Microsoft product and pretend you have some other OS. As for me, I chose the Mac OS X theme. It looks very cool. Those people at Apple are on to something. All in all, Windows XP is pretty nice. As for it being super stable, that's pretty true. But I think that the thing is, it hides it a lot better. Like those errors where it says stuff like, "Something something has done and error. Would you like to send an error report?" That must be the Illegal Operation. And I think I almost saw a BSOD. Like for a split second the screen turned blue then just went to the little "Send error report?" question. Either that or it was just a recurring nightmare.
